Why do so many people have an untreated hearing loss?

During Hearing Health Awareness Month, the team at Mission Audiology is educating the Torrance community about the solutions available to them.

But one of the biggest issues is that not enough people seek assistance when they first recognize they have symptoms.

John Hopkins University estimates it takes an average of ten years for someone to speak to a specialist. But in this time, minor conditions often become exacerbated.

There are a wide variety of reasons why people choose to ignore their hearing loss. But these are the three that our team most often finds at the clinic.

Common assumptions

One of the main reasons why people decide not to treat their condition is that they think they’ll be fitted with something they saw their grandparents wearing.

Back then, devices were bulky and ineffective. However, today, hearing technology has developed greatly.

Devices are now small and discrete and packed full of amazing features. For instance, you can stream music from your smartphone and locate a device via an app if it goes missing.

If you’re a fantastic candidate for hearing aids, these amazing instruments will truly give you a huge range of possibilities.

Unease about aging

Another reason why people don’t seek assistance is that they believe a hearing loss diagnosis will change how others perceive them.

This links back to historic stigma previously faced by the hard-of-hearing co. But as more people understand the risks of untreated conditions, perspectives are rapidly changing.

Over forty million people currently have a hearing loss in America, with this number expected to rise to nearly 75 million by 2060.

And now, scientists know that it doesn’t just stop you from processing sounds, but it can also diminish your brain’s capacity as well.

As a result, hearing loss is becoming seen as just another health issue to conquer – with people of all ages taking it extremely seriously.

Concerns about costs

It’s also common for people to have concerns about the investment required to treat their condition.

But while this might have been the case a few decades ago, like lots of technology, prices have now dropped significantly.

At Mission Audiology, we believe everyone should be able to find a route to better hearing.

In addition, health insurance companies often cover the costs of treatment, either partially or in full, making it even more accessible.
